Relic
Stage work for Ballet BC
Inaugural Recipient of the Emily Molnar Emerging Choreographer Award
In a time of constant change, expansion and development, what do we keep with us from our past, and what do we leave behind?
RELIC looks at creation through an imaginary lens and employs a sci-fi renaissance approach to storytelling and image-making. Driven by the duality between artificial and organic, isolation and intimacy, human and animal, the work is laced with an omnipresent voice-over where a creator reflects on the significance of bringing life into existence — contemplating the essence of humanity itself.
Heightened by Riku Mätinen’s haunting score, the electro-industrial roar is infused with strings, chorales, and other natural sounds surrounding the space.
“Saykaly’s eerie sci-fi exploration RELIC is nothing less than a thrilling revelation…A larger metaphor for change, advancement, and the human condition building to a chilling finale”
